The Amalfi Coast is located on the South side of the Sorrento peninsula, along the Milky Mounts ridge which steeply descends to the sea. Thanks to the mountains, which protect the coast from the north-winds, the climate is very mild and the luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation and the picturesque villages framed by the mounts and the Tyrrenian Sea , make the Amalfi Coast a world-famous resort.
The main village is Amalfi which gives the name to the divine coast-road, located almost at the centre of it.
In Middle-Ages Amalfi was a city-state, characterized by an independent government, the oldest of the four “Maritime Republics” of Italy, which include Venice, Genoa and Pisa.
It was an active port and one of the most important trading centre of the Mediterranean area, extending its authority over the nearby villages.
Without a doubt, one of the most exclusive and elegant resorts of the coast is Positano, which was a rival of Amalfi in the past and nowadays they both contend for the largest presence of tourist. The built-up area of Positano rises along the slope of the rocky coast of Mount S. Angelo with three peaks, 1444 m. above sea-level, the highest summit of the Milky Mounts. Positano is characterized by narrows alleys, flights of steps and by dome-shaped houses.
Other famous resorts are Maiori and mainly Ravello, located at 350 m. above the sea level, which overlooks the so called Dragon Valley, admired for its quietness, for its sumptuous Rufolo and Cimbrone villas, famous for their hanging gardens, which offer a extraordinary view over the Bay of Salerno.
